Gene therapy is being used to treat epidermolysis bullosa, a disease categorized by blistering of the skin that can be caused by simple irritations that wouldn't affect normal skin. In one trial, surgeons reattached modified skin to cover one patient's worst injuries, including a wound that had been open for 16 years, and has since closed.
