This year's Prius Prime, and probably the next Tesla vehicle, will feature a more efficient solar panel from Panasonic. For the Prius, the solar panel will increase the car's efficiency by up to 10 percent and add 2.2 miles of electric range.

Researchers have found a way to increase the number of hair cells they can generate from stem cells found in mice ears from 200 to 11,500. The death of hair cells accounts for 90 percent of hearing loss, so if these newly generated cells are functional, they could restore hearing for millions of people worldwide.

Since 2001, battery cost for electric vehicles (EVs) has been reduced by 80 percent. The cars still aren't an affordable option for most people, however, things are changing quickly. Tesla appears to be inching closer to the $35,000 price tag the company is targeting for its Model 3, which would put the EV in an affordability range on par with gas-powered cars.
